Organization Overview
Founded in 1983, Washington Revels is a nonprofit performing arts community of professionals and talented volunteers – adults, teens, and children. Using a colorful blend of music, dance, drama, and rituals from around the world, we create and stage community celebrations revolving around the cycle of the seasons and the joys of community connections.
All of our performances are highly interactive, providing audiences with unique opportunities to experience and participate in singing, dancing, and story-telling.
- The Christmas Revels: In Celebration of the Winter Solstice - Our flagship production, presented in the GW Lisner Auditorium in Washington, D.C., features a cast of nearly 100 performers, ages 8 to 80, and draws an audience of over 10,000 people every December.
- Seasonal celebrations - Other annual seasonal celebrations include May Revels, a summer solstice SunFest, and an autumn Harvest Dance.
- Community events - Festival Day, Pub and Community Sings, and parades offer everyone a chance to get involved in the performance.
- Year-round performing ensembles - Our four ensembles – Gallery Voices, Heritage Voices, Jubilee Voices, and Maritime Voices – present music and spoken word of particular eras or styles at a wide range of performing venues. Voices of History characters represent persons of local historical significance in first- and third-person interactions. Recordings of these groups are issued by our record label, Revels Recordings.
- Workshops for children - Play through the Ages after-school workshops guide children in grades K-5 to discover traditional performing arts and seasonal material.
- Community engagement - through the Community Initiative, Revels partners with faith communities, schools, and neighborhood groups to produce Revels-style celebrations, engaging the people of each partner community as the performers.
Revels is not something that you just watch: it is an experience! Revels is for anyone who wants to share common ground through old and new traditions – connecting people across time and cultures.
